Association Pour la Promotion de la Famille Haitienne (Profamil)
Profamil is a leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care in Haiti, delivering services from four clinics. Services include gynecological exams, contraception distribution, prenatal services, post-abortion care, breast cancer screening, and STI testing and treatment. A network of health promoters and a mobile health unit provide family planning and basic care in rural areas, comprising some of the only health care services available in these remote communities. In 2013, Profamil provided nearly 265,000 services throughout the country.
In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake that demolished Haiti’s health care systems, Profamil rebuilt its clinics and re-established critical health services in locations across the country. The destruction left 750,000 women of reproductive age in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and 15,000 in the city of Jacmel with limited access to family planning. As Haiti continues to recover, Profamil aims to maintain its focus on providing sexual and reproductive health care services to these underserved communities.
With the second highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world and 80% of Haitians living in poverty, Profamil’s accessible and affordable services are absolutely essential. In 2012, Profamil successfully advocated for a national strategy for improved, cost-effective methods of cervical cancer screening. Health care workers can now detect precancerous cervical lesions with the naked eye and identify up to 79% of women who are at high risk of developing cervical cancer.
Profamil’s peer education program distributes condoms, promotes comprehensive sexuality education, and provides referrals for youth-friendly services. It is also a member of the Haiti Adolescent Girls Network, a coalition whose main objective is to empower the most vulnerable girls to thrive in post-earthquake conditions.
