Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation International Women’s Day 2026 Message

On this International Women’s Day, the Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation (CFPA) joins voices across our region and the world in affirming the urgent Call for Rights. Justice. Action. for ALL Women and Girls.

The Caribbean has long understood the power of solidarity. Our history has taught us that small states standing alone are vulnerable, but together we possess the strength to defend human dignity, advance justice, and build societies grounded in our shared values. This spirit of solidarity must also guide our commitment to protecting the rights and wellbeing of women and girls across our region.

Over the years, Caribbean governments have taken important steps to advance gender equality. International conventions have been ratified, laws enacted to address gender-based violence and policies adopted to promote women’s health and empowerment. These commitments reflect meaningful progress and the tireless advocacy of civil society and women’s movements across the region.

Yet we must also acknowledge a difficult truth: the promise of these frameworks has not yet been fully realized in the daily lives of many women and girls. Across the Caribbean, survivors of gender-based violence still encounter barriers to justice, protection and services. Access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services remains uneven, particularly for adolescents, hinterland, migrant and vulnerable communities. Harmful laws, gender norms and structural inequalities continue to limit opportunities and undermine bodily autonomy.

This gap between policy commitments and lived realities is one that our region must urgently confront with honesty and determination. Closing this gap requires collective action and deeper collaboration. Civil society organizations, including family planning associations and women’s rights groups, continue to provide essential services, advocate for rights, and support communities. However, lasting progress depends on stronger and more intentional partnerships between governments, civil society, and faith communities.

“Faith communities play a particularly important role in shaping values and promoting compassion, dignity, and justice. When faith leaders, policymakers, and CSOs work together, they help build the social and moral foundations required for meaningful and lasting change,” said Rev. Patricia Sheerattan-Bisnauth (CEO)

At a time when the global landscape is marked by conflict, deepening inequality, and geopolitical pressures, the Caribbean must remain steadfast in its commitment to human rights, democratic governance, and regional cooperation. Speaking truth to power, whether nationally, regionally, or internationally, remains essential to defending the rights and dignity of women and girls.

Board member Jade Trim stated: “Advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights is not simply a matter of health policy. It is fundamental to women’s autonomy, economic empowerment, democratic participation, and sustainable development across our region.”

The CFPA reaffirms its commitment to working with governments, regional institutions, civil society partners, and faith communities to ensure that every woman and girl in the Caribbean can live free from violence, make informed decisions about her body and life, and participate fully in shaping the future of our societies.

The Caribbean moves forward best when we move forward together. Let us strengthen our solidarity as Caribbean peoples, closing the gap between promise and reality and ensuring that the call for Rights. Justice. Action. for ALL Women and Girls becomes a lived reality across our region.

Because when women and girls flourish, our entire Caribbean family flourishes.
Happy International Women’s Day!
