Family Planning Association of Trinidad & Tobago (FPATT)
Founded in 1957, FPATT is the exclusive provider of sexual and reproductive health services in four districts in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2013, it provided more than 100,000 services. In addition to its clinics, FPATT operates a mobile health unit that brings vital health services to vulnerable and marginalized communities throughout the country. Its services include gynecological care, contraceptives, pregnancy tests, and STI prevention and testing.
FPATT actively promotes the rights of marginalized groups—such as LGBTQ people and sex workers—in what is largely an intolerant environment. Its Sex Workers for Change Project has encouraged positive attitudes in recognizing the human rights of sex workers.
FPATT has also spearheaded a cutting-edge, nationally recognized program for engaging parents and adolescents in conversations about sexual and reproductive health issues. This project has been successful in bridging the communication gap between parents and teens. FPATT also operates the first youth center in the country.
In Port of Spain and San Fernando, FPATT has established a project to provide a full range of sexual and reproductive health services to young people with disabilities. Going Beyond the Walls offers HIV testing and counseling, Pap tests, and seminars to sensitize all young people to the issues faced by those living with a disability.
“People seem to think there’s something strange about me wanting to have sex or enjoying it,” says Monique, a program participant. “This program has given me confidence. I’ll make sure that what I learned I’ll teach to others.”
