Expanding Access to Safe Abortion
The Caribbean has some of the most restrictive laws against abortion in the world. As a result, more than half of abortions in our region are performed in unsafe circumstances. The World Health Organization estimates that one in eight maternal deaths in the Latin American and Caribbean region result from unsafe abortions.
Women risk their lives to have an unsafe abortion. That is why we work closely with our member associations to make sure women can be supported in obtaining the safe abortion services they need. Providing women with real options for ending unwanted pregnancies is a critical part of reducing the deaths and injuries that result from unsafe abortions.
