Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA)
Based in Georgetown, GRPA is the leading non-governmental provider of sexual and reproductive health care in Guyana. Its integrated services include gynecological exams, contraception distribution, cervical cancer screening, abortion services, and STI testing and treatment. In 2013, GRPA provided more than 85,000 services nationwide.
The Youth Advocacy Movement at GRPA ensures that critical information about sexual and reproductive health and rights reaches young people in Guyana though a variety of educational and recreational activities. They make radio appearances, host discussion groups, and distribute brochures at popular hangout spots. Youth interests are represented at the highest levels of decision-making throughout the organization. Former and current Youth Advocacy Movement members are not only part of GRPA’s staff, but also hold key positions on its Board of Directors.
Although abortion is legal in Guyana, the procedure is not performed in public health centers, which is where most people receive care. The cost of the procedure is prohibitively expensive when obtained at a private clinic. To meet the needs of Guyanese women, GRPA offers abortion services at a reduced cost. It also engages in advocacy initiatives to support abortion provision in government-run institutions.
In 2013, GRPA was instrumental in bringing together a coalition of faith-based organizations to declare their support of sexual and reproductive health and rights at the Sub-Regional Conference on Population and Development in the Caribbean. The declaration encouraged a strong regional outcome document: the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.
