Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA)
BFPA is a comprehensive family planning program in Barbados. It has been regarded as a leading authority on sexual and reproductive health in Barbados for over 60 years. BFPA works closely with the Ministry of Health to provide sexual and reproductive health information sessions, family planning and contraceptive services, testing and treatment of STIs, Pap tests, pre- and post-natal care, and pre- and post-abortion care. Based in Bridgetown, BFPA operates 81 centers around the country to increase access to family planning, and it runs a public awareness campaign on a number of health issues.
BFPA’s youth program includes a drop-in center that provides counseling and contraceptive services, and offers young people a safe space to have important discussions about sexual and reproductive health. BFPA’s clinic has a special weekly time allotted for services for young people. The organization’s youth advocates regularly participate in sexual and reproductive health discussions on television and radio programs, and hold educational sessions on adolescent sexual and reproductive health in schools and at other youth venues.
In 2012, BFPA was the lead advocate for a bill that passed, aligning the age of consent with the age of access to contraceptives. In that same year, BFPA also contributed to the passage of a national youth policy that addressed sexual and reproductive health.
